Bear Valley Police Department Warns of Facebook Marketplace Vehicle Scam
The Bear Valley Police Department (BVPD) is warning residents about a potential scam targeting individuals selling vehicles on Facebook Marketplace.
The scam involves two suspects, described as foreign-born males claiming to be a father-and-son team. The suspects request a test drive of the vehicle, and afterward, the engine appears to have an oil leak. They point out the supposed issue, flash a wad of cash, and offer to purchase the vehicle for a significantly reduced price. Investigators believe the suspects may pour oil on the engine at some point during the interaction to create the appearance of a mechanical defect.
Safety Tips for Sellers
Residents are advised to exercise caution when selling vehicles online:
- Inspect Your Vehicle: Thoroughly check your vehicle before and after test drives for signs of tampering.
- Ask for Identification: Request ID from potential buyers. A refusal to provide identification may indicate fraudulent intent.
- File a Notice of Transfer: Completing a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) with the DMV is crucial to protect yourself from future liability. Be prepared with the following information:
- New owner’s name and address.
- Vehicle license plate number and last five digits of the VIN.
- Vehicle odometer reading as of the sale or transfer date.
How to Report
If you have been targeted by this scam or have information about the suspects, please contact the Bear Valley Police Department at 661-821-3239or BVPD@bvcsd.org.
The BVPD reminds residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to help keep our community safe.
